When crime is on the rise in the city, me and my fellow police officers have to take immediate action so that the citizens are not put in danger. One of the ways that we do this is by trying to anticipate when fugitives are going to act, and take them in before anyone is hurt. This month we had a huge spike in violent home invasions, and all evidence pointed to a one man crime spree that needed to be stopped.
Our suspect was not only committing these crimes right out in the open, he wasn’t even trying to hide from us. He would simply go from safe house to safe house, sell his stolen property, buy drugs, get high, and repeat. As he became more addicted to the drugs, his violence would escalate. It was time that we took this suspect off the streets, but we were having trouble getting anyone to talk with us.
Securus Technologies is a company that makes inmate telephone monitoring systems, and they recently upgraded their system at the local prison. The LBS software could identify key conversations and do the work of several of our officers. We decided to try to see if the system could pick up on any chatter concerning our suspect, we were shocked at what we discovered.
One inmate was talking about getting family to his house to collect his stuff because he was holding a ton of goods he bought for pennies on the dollar from our suspect. He didn’t want the items confiscated, so he asked to have them moved. He was told to keep buying because the merchandise was too good for the price, and that was the break we needed. We were at that next buy, and took down all parties and returned all the stolen property.
